Lego has been a staple in the world of toys for generations, and their relationship with space exploration is no different. With the upcoming release of two new space sets, Artemis 5 and the Milky Way, the company has conducted a study revealing that 86% of children between the ages of four and fourteen are interested in space.

To celebrate this renewed interest in space exploration, Lego encouraged kids to design their own spacecraft. Out of numerous submissions, six designs were chosen and brought to life by Didac Perez Soriano, an Associate Master Builder at Lego House. These imaginative creations were then showcased in a drone show set against the New York City skyline, featuring designs such as a T-Rex with a jetpack and a bed with wings.

During the event, TechRadar spoke with Dan Meehan, Creative Lead for Lego Space, and Kellie Gerardi, an astronaut and citizen scientist. They discussed the significance of children's enthusiasm for space and how Lego is catering to that interest with creative and educational sets.

Meehan highlighted that while Lego has always had space-themed sets, they are now offering more realistic sets through collaborations with organizations like NASA. Additionally, in 2024, Lego plans to introduce a common alien design element that can be found across different themes, from City to Technic.

Gerardi, who recently experienced space travel as a payload specialist on Virgin Galactic's Galactic 05 research mission, shared her emotional journey and the overview effect she felt upon seeing Earth from space. She also mentioned her fondness for a Lego Space Shuttle set she had as a child, which helped inspire her career in space exploration.

Lego's commitment to inspiring the next generation of space explorers is clear, as they provide the tools for children to imagine, create, and learn about the universe beyond our planet. With their innovative sets and events like the drone show, Lego continues to spark curiosity and creativity in young minds.
